Petit Perou

Morgon - Beaujolais, | Hugo Thenevent

ORGANIC - BIODYNAMIC - MINIMAL INTERVENTION

The world of wine is a small place. Expansive in geography but very compact when it comes to the relationships and people within it. If the entire population is separated by six degrees of separation, the wine community might be separated by three. This much is true at least for our latest and most exciting import, Domaine de Petit Perou from Morgon, Beaujolais. When I’m asked how we came about these wines it is much easier to say these wines are made by a friend of a friend. Truthfully, Hugo Thevenet is a close buddy of Marin Fumey of our Jura  producer, Fumey Chatelain, who did vintage in Australia

alongside our friend Sven Joschke. Three degrees, see?

While it’s great to work in these tight circles even more important are the stories these wines tell and the unquestionable deliciousness contained within the bottles, and this fifth-generation family estate spanning 16ha across Morgon and Brouilly have both in spades. Under the watch of Laurent (4th generation) and Hugo (5th generation) their estate wines are classic, expressive Beaujolais made very much by hand in the family’s little cellar. The wonderful stories on each of their cuvees, not to mention the different personalities of each era of Thevenet that shaped what Petit Perou is today, make these juicy Gamays a very welcome addition to our portfolio.

2021 PETIT PEROU BEAUJOLAIS ROUGE ‘TU M’TIENS AU JUS’ – BEAUJOLAIS, FR

Tu m’tiens au jus refers to Laurent and Hugo’s fluid, trusting father and son connection, which translates into the wine’s extreme suppleness and juicy fruit freshness. The term ‘jus’ (French for ‘juice’) also refers to electric current being passed on the way information circulates easily – a fitting name for a wine that keeps us abreast at every sip. This is a blend from 60-year-old Gamay vines grown in the Beaujolais appellation. The grapes were destemmed and put through semi carbonic maceration before spending 4 months in concrete vats and being bottled early in the season under CO2 to preserve the aromatic complexity. This wine always shows tremendous charm, with lively characters of raspberry, blackberry, and ripe red cherry on the nose, also filling the palate generously. It has a light-hearted finish that leaves you wanting for more
