Alkina is a biodynamic and organic estate located in the Western Barossa ranges, where ancient soils, old vines, and micro-terroirs come together to create authentic, terroir-driven wines. The name ‘Alkina’—meaning ‘Moon’ in Indigenous Australian language—reflects our deep respect for the land and the natural forces shaping our wines.

Certified organic and biodynamic since 2018, Alkina embraces sustainable farming, fostering biodiversity through native plant restoration and habitat creation along Greenock Creek. We farm without synthetic chemicals, believing that healthy soils and vibrant ecosystems lead to wines that truly reflect the land.

Established in 2015 by Argentinian vintner Alejandro Bulgheroni and local winegrower Amelia Nolan, Alkina’s vineyards, including the historic Old Quarter, are planted to Grenache, Shiraz, Mataro, and Semillon. Every wine is a pure expression of this remarkable site, shaped by thoughtful stewardship and a commitment to leaving the land healthier for future generations.

2023 ALKINA ‘KIN’ SEMILLON

The season has given us pretty, floral Semillon with purity at its core. A high-toned wine with lemon, jasmine, lemongrass and hints of stone fruit, it is marked by succulent acidity and a light, textural grip on the palate.

2023 ALKINA ‘KIN’ ROSE

Delicious Grenache rosé, from old vine fruit, that dials up purity, energy and intensity in 2023. Delicate strawberry, white peach and rose petal aromas are followed by a shock of electric flavour on the palate and fine talcum powder tannin. Dry, crunchy and vibrant with juicy cranberry acidity through the finish.

2023 ALKINA ‘KIN’ SHIRAZ

The cool 2023 season delivered a medium weight and juicy wine with aromatics of dark rose, licorice and tea characters. Underneath, classic western ridge depth is displayed with violet perfume and purple fruit, wrapped around a schistic, rocky core.

2023 ALKINA ‘KIN’ MATARO

Flinty and savoury; give it time and air in the glass and juicy red licorice and black pepper will present. Medium weight and juicy. The red fruited palate finishes with a wash of acid and fine powdered texture.

2023 ALKINA ‘NIGHT SKY’ GSM

All Grenache parcels were fermented separately as 100% whole bunches in concrete tulips, spending an average of 3 weeks on skins. Shiraz components were fermented separately as 60-70% whole bunches, in a mixture of concrete and stainless steel vessels. The Mataro was destemmed and fermented in concrete on skins for two weeks. Each component was basket pressed to concrete for malolactic fermentation and maturation before racking and blending in spring.

2023 ALKINA ‘KIN’ GRENACHE

The cool 2023 season has delivered a wine of elegance, with exceptional fine tannin. The Kin Grenache feels energetic and floral, but give it time and red fruit, blood orange and cardamon will present. A patch of vines on limestone provides vibrancy and definition, necessary for the wine’s drive, with flesh and power from Blocks 22 on clay and 18 on schist.

2023 ALKINA ‘BIRDSONG’ SHIRAZ

Shiraz from block 23 came in as exceptional quality, despite the difficult season. It was fermented in two parcels as 70% and 100% whole bunch in concrete and stainless steel and pressed after 3 weeks on skins. Fruit from old vine Block 5+6 was fermented as 60% whole bunches also in concrete. Both block 23 and 5+6 were pressed once dry and matured in concrete. The remaining components, Block 38 and 26a were co-fermented in stainless steel as 30% whole bunches, while polygon 11 stayed as 100% whole bunch and was fermented in concrete. Both parcels were pressed and matured in large format oak. Components were racked and blended in spring prior to bottling.

2022 ALKINA ‘OLD QUARTER’ GSM

An elegant, perfumed blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro from the Old Quarter of the Alkina vineyard, planted in the 1950s. This is a pure expression of the character of the site that in 2022 shows the fruit intensity of the season overlaid on fresh, long and seamless tannins that coat the mouth.
