Mewstone / Hughes & Hughes

Flowerpot, Tasmania

SUSTAINABLE - MINIMAL INTERVENTION - VEGAN

Brothers Matthew and Jonny Hughes founded Mewstone Vineyard in Flowerpot, Tasmania, on the banks of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel. Once a cherry orchard, the vineyard now spans 3.5 hectares, planted primarily to Pinot Noir, with small parcels of Chardonnay, Syrah, Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc. Their approach focuses on expressive, single-site wines with minimal intervention.

Jonny, the winemaker, trained in New Zealand and gained experience in Australia, Italy, and Canada before returning home to Tasmania, where he spent seven years as Assistant Winemaker at Moorilla.

The north-facing slopes and Jurassic dolerite soils provide an ideal environment for premium grape growing. The vineyard is hand-pruned and hand-picked, with a strong focus on soil health and biodiversity through mulching and composting.

With Mewstone established, the brothers launched Hughes & Hughes, a small-batch range that allows Jonny to experiment with techniques inspired by his global winemaking journey.
