Mewstone / Hughes & Hughes
Flowerpot, Tasmania
SUSTAINABLE - MINIMAL INTERVENTION - VEGAN
Brothers Matthew and Jonny Hughes have established Mewstone Vineyard on the banks of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel in the tiny hamlet of Flowerpot, 30 mins driver South West of Hobart. They create expressive single site wines with a minimum of intervention in the winery. The vineyard is a former cherry orchard and with some new plantings in 2019 expanded to a final size of 3.5 hectares. The original planting consists mostly of Pinot Noir with small plantings of Chardonnay, Syrah, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc.
Jonny is the winemaker in this family venture. He studied winemaking in New Zealand before working in Langhorne Creek (South Australia), Central Otago (NZ), Mornington Peninsula (Victoria), Barolo (Italy), the Hunter Valley (New South Wales) and Okanagan Valley (Canada). Heading home to Tasmania, Jonny worked in various roles within the local wine industry, before settling in as the Assistant Winemaker at Moorilla in Hobart for seven years.
The Mewstone Vineyard lies on the banks of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel in the farmland of Flowerpot. The gently north fac- ing slopes capture the cool southern sunshine to produce premium wine making grapes. The vineyard is protected from the harsh prevailing westerly winds by the hills that rise quickly from the water. The soils are predominantly duplex soils formed on Jurassic dolerite. This consists of loam textured topsoil over a sandy loam horizon on clay subsoil.
The vineyard is hand pruned and the fruit hand picked with the help of family and friends. They manage the vineyard from the ground up. The extra effort put into ensuring a vibrant ecosystem below the ground translates into quality fruit on the vines above. Through extensive use of mulches, composts and compost teas they have been able to continually improve their soils.
With Mewstone vineyard established, the brothers added a second range. A venture that focuses more on the winemaking. Sourcing quality grapes from other local vineyards, the Hughes & Hughes range allows Jonny to be more daring with his wine- making endeavours and bring together techniques that he has encountered from his world travels. Producing in small batches means he can put a whole lot of love into these unique creations.
